Comments about Johnston & Murphy ELLINGTON CAP TOE SADDLE:

I own several J&M shoes, but this new style did not hold up after 6 days in the office. The cloth material split apart on both shoes, and I had to return them. If it had only happened on one shoe, it might have been a flaw, but since it happened on both shoes in similar places, the material is obviously not wear proof.

Comments about Johnston & Murphy ELLINGTON CAP TOE SADDLE:

First off, never I have ever received so many compliments on a pair of shoes. One of my co-workers commented on these, and I saw him wearing a pay of Johnston & Murphies one or two weeks later. Coincidence? I think not.

But this is my second pair of this exact model of shoe. I returned the first pair within two weeks of purchase because the sheepskin frayed and separated at the "pivot points" towards the toe. In other words, the cloth on the exterior of the shoe tore apart in the areas where the shoe bends as I walk.

I thought it to be a fluke or the product of too much Scotch guard on the first pair, but the second pair is doing the same thing (I didn't use Scotch guard this time). I still wear the shoes and it's not totally fatal, but bear in mind I've had this pair for about a month. I simply don't see them holding up too much longer as the material under the sheepskin appears to be felt or something. As the tears in the sheepskin worsens, it's my expectation the shoe will totally fall apart.

I know these shoes are a new model, so (a) maybe this design defect eluded testing; or (b) the shoe is supposed to do this to exhibit a "rugged" look a la torn blue jeans. I strongly suspect "a," and have all but completely dismissed "b." I'll return to Johnston & Murphy in the future as I've heard nothing but good things from this company. I'm writing this because not even the staff at the retail store was familiar with this issue and believed the first pair I returned was the product of a manufacturing defect rather than a design defect. I think it's the latter, obviously, so you should probably look into it. Maybe add some elasticity to the sheepskin (if that's even possible)?

I'm very interested in ordering a pair of the Ellington Cap Toe Saddle shoe in blue. But two of three reviewers report that though they love the style, the cloth part of the shoe comes apart within days or a few weeks. One customer was on his second pair, having had to return the first because the linen split. Has this problem been fixed?

In the shoe size chart provided by this website, it gives the size conversion as well as length in cm. I would like to know if this length refers to the length of foot (heel to toe) or if it is the size of the space in the shoe.

How do you treat the linen to protect it and what does the linen look like after months of wear?

              A:

Linen is a very hard material to care for, as there are specific care instructions to linen garments. In this case, the best option to clean the linen is with a small amount of soap and water. After months of wear, of course the linen will dirty due to weather conditions.
