Comments about JohnstonΜrphy Melton Cap Toe:

Look, this is a great pair of basic dress shoes that everyone should have. Day 2 of wearing is the worst - the leather doesn't soften evenly and can push on your feet but it gets way better by day 3. They are quite shiny so keep that in mind if pairing with your clothing. Best quality for $ thus far.

Comments about JohnstonΜrphy Melton Cap Toe:

I used the shoe for travel along with other J&M shoes. This is the newest shoe I have of the ten. Shoe #9 also wore out on the sole and came apart. J&M will not back their shoes. Do NOT buy if you wear dress shoes for travel. Their quality has been sacrificed in order to reduce production costs.

I own several pairs of J&M shoes, however the recent models appear to be garbage. Two of mine separated at the sole, poor workmanship. I will move up to a $350-$500 pair of shoes but it will not be J&M.

Great fit right out of the box. Ordered my normal size, and it fit perfect. This shoe will work for any occasion or setting. It's well made, and I was able to break them in after wearing them for a few days. I would definitely buy another pair should these wear out. Really happy with the look and style.

I ORIGINALLY BOUGHT A ATCHISON CAP TOE BULCHER FROM JOHNSTON&MURPHY ON LINE. THE SHOE WAS A TERRIBLE FIT AND POOR QUALITY. I RETURNED THE SHOE TO JOHNSTON&MURPHY STORE LAKESIDE SHOPPING CENTER METAIRIE LA.70002. THE MANAGER SCOTT CONNER GAVE ME EXCELLENT SERVICE. HE WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL . HE WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND TO SATISFY MY COMPLAINT AND RECOMMEND AN EXCELLENT REPLACEMENT. I SHALL ALWAYS CONTINUE TO BUY JOHNSTON&MURPHY SHOES.

I received a pair in the mail of 10B. They are a little snug in terms of the width (but perfect in length). Will the shoes stretch a little bit? How do I know if they are too narrow?

The shoes can break in after little wear, if they are too snug you can exchange them for free using the UPS prepaid return label that came in the box and try a 10C.

How much space should there be between end of toe and end of the shoe to ensure good fit?
Asked on 9/11/2014 by Doug from Port Douglas Far North Queensland

            1 answer

            • A:

There should be about a 1/2 inch between the end of your longest toe and the end of the front of the shoe. Ideally you measure your foot towards the end of the day and while standing for proper measurment.

Just a slight clarification on this. I emailed J&M about this, and was told it is full grain and hand polished, which is different from corrected grain. They said all their calf skin uppers are full grain for that matter.

          • Q:

I ordered my J&M Melton online. The tongue is stitched close to the laces near the top of the tongue on the inner side of each shoe. Is this normal, or did I get a defective shoe? It makes it hard to lace, but more importantly (and frequently) harder to spread wide to put on.

              A:

The Melton Cap-Toe's tongue is stitched close to the laces. All of our J&M shoes should be put on with a shoe horn. It makes it easier to get the shoe on without stretching the shoe.

If you are still having trouble with the shoe, we can send you a pre-paid shipping label for a return or exchange.

Unfortunately, we do not have a 12.5 size which is what I would have recommended. However, I believe a size 13 would be too generous, so I would order a 12. Depending on if you have a wider foot, then I would order a 12 EE, OR, if your foot is not wide, go with the 12 D. We do offer free returns if you need to change the size.
