Shoe Care Tips
Leather shoes will provide greater comfort and longer wear when properly cared for.
Johnston & Murphy craftsmen recommend the following tips to keep your leather shoes looking and performing their best:
- Store leather shoes with moisture-absorbing cedar shoe trees to help prevent cracking and permanent creasing.
- Use a shoe horn when putting on shoes to help maintain the shape of the heel counter. Never force your feet into shoes.
- Keep shoes away from direct heat, which can dry out leather. Allow leather to dry naturally.
- Rotate your footwear. Leather shoes should have at least one full day to air out between wearings.
- When polishing, use a high-quality cream or paste polish to moisturize and protect the leather. Avoid liquid polishes.
- Do not use cleaners containing acids or detergents, as they can damage fine leather and accelerate aging.
- If shoes become heavily soiled, gently clean them with a damp cloth and a small amount of mild Ivory soap. Allow them to dry naturally, then apply Johnston & Murphy Shoe Cream to restore their appearance.
